Mountainzone.com is celebrating it's 10th Anniversary, which is very impressive considering where the Internet was 10 years ago. As part of that celebration, they are re-posting some of their best articles over the years, and amongst them is Makalu Gau: The Untold Story of the 1996 Everest Tragedy. The article tells the story of Gau Ming Ho, a climber from Taiwan, who survived those incredible storms above 8000 meters on Everest that fateful day back in May of 1996. Many of you have probably read Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, but this tells the story from another perspective, and is well worth a look despite the fact that it is dated some.
It's hard to believe we're coming up on the 10th anniversary of the Everest Tragedy. It seems like it wasn't all that long ago that the tale began to filter back to the world about the events that took place on the mountain that day. I'm sure there will be a 10th Anniversary Edition of Krakauer's book, and if you haven't read it, I can't recommend it enough.
